German physicist, mathematician and musician Ernst Chladni (1756-1827) conducted a series of experiments creating visual sound vibrations with musical notes displayed in sand. These early discoveries were later expanded by Swiss physician and scientist, Hans Jenny (1904-1972) applying a range of acoustic tones to demonstrate the complexity of wave phenomenon underlying all forms in nature. Referencing the Greek word, Cyma, or wave, Jenny continued the Chladni research calling the complex symmetrical pattern structures, “Cymatics”.
“The formative or generative power of sound has been recounted in ancient mythologies and creation stories from around the world, and addressed by many philosophers and natural scientists. But finally through the discovery of Chladni sound figures, perhaps for the first time in history, this mythical power became a phenomenon that was directly accessible to our senses.” Alexander Lauterwasser
Today, the implications of this visual representation of frequencies is beginning to be rediscovered and utilized within the framework of many energetic healing modalities. Vibrational exchange between people and nature has been proven to be critical to our physical, mental/emotional and spiritual wellness. Biologist Edward O. Wilson described the innate human propensity for connection with nature and all form of life as "biophilia". Eco-psychology incorporates the benefits of talk therapy within the context of outdoor settings, allowing restorative frequencies of the natural environment to enhance and facilitate positive change. Through experiences that promote opportunities for immersion in the natural world, The Cyma Eco-Spiritual Counseling & Retreat Center promotes realignment with healing frequency and wholeness.
Founding Director, Tammi Grovatt-Dawkins, MEd. "Spirit sleeps in the stone, breathes in the plant, dreams in the animal and awakens in man."
Ancient Hindustani Verse
At Cyma Center, we believe that everyone has the ability to lead a happy and fulfilling life. We encourage growth and movement toward harmony that is based upon being a part "of" nature rather than being apart "from" nature. Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that mental and emotional well-being are integral to overall health, and that eco-therapy can be a powerful tool for achieving this balance.
"Here in this endless and gleaming wilderness
I was removed farther than ever from the world of men
And I never saw so closely and so clearly
The image in the mirror of my own soul" Herman Hesse
Cymatics, the study of visible sound and vibration, has been increasingly explored in the field of healing. By visualizing sound frequencies through the use of materials like sand or liquid, cymatics offers a unique perspective on how sound can influence physical and emotional well-being. Through this emerging, integrative practice, researchers and healers seek to understand how vibrations can be harnessed to promote healing and balance within the mind and body. The intricate patterns created by sound waves serve as a reminder of the profound connection between sound, energy, and health. As the principles of cymatics continue to be incorporated into various healing modalities, it opens up new possibilities for enhancing holistic wellness and deepening our understanding of the power of sound in promoting healing.
Shinrin Yoko, or Forest Bathing is one of the modalities that supports the use of natural frequency as a critical component in wellness.
"We are part of the natural world. Our rhythms are the rhythms of nature. As we walk slowly through the forest, seeing, listening, smelling, tasting, and touching, we bring our rhythms into step with nature. Shinrin-yoku is like a bridge. By opening our senses, it bridges the gap between us and the natural world. And when we are in harmony with the natural world we can begin to heal. Our nervous system can reset itself, our bodies and minds can go back to how they ought to be. No longer out of kilter with nature but once again in tune with it, we are refreshed and restored. We may not travel very far on our forest walk but, in connecting us with nature, shinrin-yoko takes us all the way home to our true selves."
Dr. Qing Li
We combine therapy with nature to nurture our minds and bodies, through forest-guided meditation and walks, to counseling sessions in the outdoors amongst the healing energy of nature around us."
